This amendment was written into Cuba’s constitution. pushed for and won the Platt Amendment, which provided for American intervention in Cuba in case an unstable new government failed to protect life, liberty, and property. American troops had occupied the island since Spain’s withdrawal from the country in 1898 after the Spanish-American War.
